Second Pastor, 1860-1881
Father ElkmannFather Eickmann for born in Telgte, Westphalia, Germany on October 14, 1817. Little is known of his early life or when he came to America, but we do know that he was ordained on May 29, 1847. He became Assistant Pastor around 1851, and, upon the departure of Father Clement, Father Eickmann assumed the position of Pastor. In 1881, he left his daily duties as pastor, having served Old St. Mary’s for more than 30 years, and died on October 15, 1885. He lay in state in Old St. Mary’s until his funeral all the while being watched over by the St. John Men’s Society and the St. Stanislaus Young Men’s Society. Father Eickmann was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Bernard, Ohio.
